Mini Biography

Born: 23 May 1977, Hammersmith, London, England.

Richard Ayoade was born to a Nigerian father and a Norwegian mother, which exposed him to diverse cultural influences from an early age. Growing up in Suffolk, he attended St. Joseph’s College, Ipswich, where he developed a keen interest in the arts. Ayoade’s passion for performing arts led him to study Law at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, where he actively participated in student theatre productions.

Ayoade’s career took off in the early 2000s when he became a regular cast member on the British comedy show “The Mighty Boosh.” This marked the beginning of his fruitful collaboration with fellow comedians and actors. However, it was his role as Maurice Moss in the critically acclaimed sitcom “The IT Crowd” that truly showcased his comedic brilliance and earned him widespread recognition.

In addition to his acting endeavors, Ayoade has made a name for himself as a talented writer and director. He gained critical acclaim for his directorial debut with the coming-of-age film “Submarine” in 2010. The film’s unique visual style and Ayoade’s ability to capture the nuances of adolescence impressed both audiences and critics alike.

Ayoade continued to flourish behind the camera, directing and co-writing the dystopian black comedy “The Double” (2013), starring Jesse Eisenberg. His distinct directorial style, characterised by deadpan humour and a meticulous attention to detail, garnered him further praise.
