Parminder Nagra is a British film and television actress, best known for her role as Jess Bhamra in the film “Bend It Like Beckham” and as Dr. Neela Rasgotra in the long-running medical drama series “ER.”
Parminder Nagra was born to Sikh parents who had emigrated from Punjab, India. Growing up in a working-class neighbourhood, she developed a passion for acting at a young age. Nagra attended the Northfield House Primary School and later the Soar Valley College. Her interest in performing arts continued to flourish, leading her to study drama at the prestigious Academy of Live and Recorded Arts in London.
Nagra’s breakthrough role came in 2002 when she portrayed Jess Bhamra, a young British-Indian football enthusiast, in “Bend It Like Beckham.” The film was a critical and commercial success, earning Nagra widespread acclaim and establishing her as a rising star.

Following her success in “Bend It Like Beckham,” Nagra joined the cast of the renowned television series “ER” in 2003. Her portrayal of Dr. Neela Rasgotra, a talented medical intern, earned her critical acclaim and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. She remained with the show for six seasons, becoming one of its most beloved characters.
Nagra’s career continued to flourish with appearances in various films and television shows. She starred in “Ella Enchanted,” “The Blacklist,” and the hit television series “Psych,” among others.
Parminder Nagra married photographer James Stenson in 2009, and the couple welcomed their son, Kai, in 2009. However, they eventually divorced in 2013. Nagra has been an advocate for diversity in the entertainment industry, using her platform to promote inclusivity and representation.
