Sarah Lancashire grew up in a creative household. Her father, Geoffrey Lancashire, was a television scriptwriter known for his work on Coronation Street. This environment sparked her initial interest in the arts, though she initially considered working behind the scenes. She attended Oldham Hulme Grammar School and later pursued her passion for acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 1986. Her time at drama school was both challenging and transformative, solidifying her commitment to the craft.
Sarah Lancashire’s career began in local theatre, but she soon transitioned to television, where she gained widespread recognition. Her breakout role came as Raquel Wolstenhulme in the iconic British soap opera Coronation Street, a character she portrayed from 1991 to 1996. This role established her as a household name and showcased her talent for blending humour and depth. Over the years, she has taken on a variety of roles in acclaimed series such as Where the Heart Is, Clocking Off, and Last Tango in Halifax. More recently, her portrayal of Catherine Cawood in the gripping drama Happy Valley earned her critical acclaim and multiple awards. Lancashire has also appeared in films like And When Did You Last See Your Father? and Dad’s Army, as well as West End productions, including Blood Brothers, and Guys and Dolls.
