Roger Allam developed an early interest in acting. He attended the University of Cambridge where he studied English Literature and Drama and it was during this time that he formed a strong bond with his fellow student, Richard Curtis.

After graduating from university, Allam embarked on a successful stage career. He made his West End debut in the 1984 production of “The Tempest,” and he has since appeared in numerous critically acclaimed productions, including “Hamlet,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” and “The Crucible.”

In 2000, Allam originated the role of Javert in the West End production of “Les Misérables.” His performance was widely praised and he received several accolades, including the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

Allam has also achieved recognition for his television work. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Chief Inspector Fred Thursday in the BBC series “Endeavour,” which is a prequel to the popular detective show “Inspector Morse.” He has also had notable roles in the series “The Thick of It,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Murder in Provence.”

Allam is married to actress Rebecca Saire and they have two children together.
