Patrick Troughton is best remembered for his transformative portrayal of the Second Doctor in the iconic British science-fiction series Doctor Who, a role that cemented his status as a television legend.
Troughton’s early life was marked by his passion for acting. He frequented the Mill Hill School’s dramatic society, where his talent quickly shone through. During World War II, he served in the Royal Navy, where he continued to pursue his passion for theatre by organising productions for his fellow sailors.
After the war, Patrick Troughton enrolled at the Embassy School of Acting in Swiss Cottage, where he honed his craft under the tutelage of renowned actress Eileen Thorndike. His professional career began in the 1940s with roles in various radio and television productions. His stage work garnered critical acclaim, leading to appearances in notable plays such as “The Tempest” and “Hamlet.”
In 1966, Troughton’s career took a pivotal turn when he was cast as the Second Doctor in Doctor Who. His portrayal of the Time Lord was a departure from the previous incarnation, introducing a more unconventional and eccentric character. Troughton’s Doctor was known for his playful wit, unpredictable nature, and ability to blend seamlessly into any situation, making him a fan favourite.
