Thandiwe Newton (formerly credited as Thandie Newton) was born to a Zimbabwean mother and an English father. She spent her early years in Zambia, where her father worked as a lab technician. At the age of three, her family relocated to Cornwall, England, following political unrest in Zambia. This multicultural upbringing greatly influenced Newton’s perspective and shaped her passion for storytelling.
Despite facing racial prejudice during her childhood, Newton embraced her heritage and developed a deep appreciation for the arts. She attended Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, where she learnt her trade and nurtured her love for the theatre. Her dedication and talent caught the attention of talent scouts, leading her to secure a scholarship at the prestigious Cambridge University.
Throughout her career, Newton has delivered remarkable performances in a wide range of genres. Notable films include “Beloved” (1998), “Crash” (2004), and “The Pursuit of Happyness” (2006). Her portrayal of Christine Thayer in “Crash” earned her widespread recognition and a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In addition to her success in film, Thandiwe Newton has also made a significant impact on television. Her role as Maeve Millay in the hit HBO series “Westworld” (2016-present) received critical acclaim and earned her Primetime Emmy and Critics’ Choice Television Award nominations.
Beyond her achievements in the entertainment industry, Thandiwe Newton is known for her advocacy work and commitment to social justice. She has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights, particularly addressing issues of sexual abuse and harassment. Thandiwe Newton is married to English writer and director Ol Parker and they have three children together.
