Sarah Bolger was born to Monica and Derek Bolger, a housewife and a butcher respectively. She has a younger sister, Emma, who is also an actress.
Sarah Bolger began her acting career at the age of eight, when she and her sister auditioned for the film In America (2003), directed by Jim Sheridan. They both got the roles of the daughters of Irish immigrants in New York. Bolger received critical acclaim for her performance and won several awards, including an Independent Spirit Award and a Satellite Award.
Sarah Bolger continued to act in films such as Stormbreaker (2006), where she played the love interest of Alex Pettyfer’s character, and The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008), where she portrayed Mallory Grace, one of the siblings who discover a magical world. She also voiced the main character, Umi, in the English dub of the Studio Ghibli film From Up on Poppy Hill (2011).
Sarah Bolger’s breakthrough role on television was as Princess Mary Tudor in the historical drama The Tudors (2008-2010), for which she won an Irish Film and Television Award. She also appeared as Princess Aurora in the fantasy series Once Upon a Time (2012-2015) and as Jade in the martial arts series Into the Badlands (2015-2017). In 2018, she joined the cast of Mayans M.C., a spin-off of Sons of Anarchy, as Emily Thomas, the wife of the protagonist.
Sarah Bolger has also starred in several independent and horror films, such as The Moth Diaries (2011), The Lazarus Effect (2015), Emelie (2015), and A Good Woman Is Hard to Find (2019).
Sarah Bolger is a practicing Catholic and has said that her faith is important to her. She was selected to be part of the project “The Face of Ireland” by photographer Kevin Abosch in 2011, along with other Irish celebrities. She has also been involved in charity work, such as supporting the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
Sarah Bolger has been in a relationship with actor Julian Morris since 2012. They met on the set of Once Upon a Time and have been living together in Los Angeles. Bolger has said that she considers Ireland her home and visits frequently. She has a dog named Darby, who often accompanies her on her travels.
