Born to Monica, a home maker and Derek Bolger, a butcher, Sarah Bolger’s early life was rooted in a family environment outside the entertainment industry. She grew up alongside her younger sister, Emma, who would also embark on an acting career, creating a familial connection within the world of performance.
Sarah Bolger began her acting career at the age of eight, when she and her sister auditioned for the film In America (2003), directed by Jim Sheridan. They both got the roles of the daughters of Irish immigrants in New York.
Sarah Bolger continued to act in films such as Stormbreaker (2006), where she played the love interest of Alex Pettyfer’s character, and The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008), where she portrayed Mallory Grace, one of the siblings who discover a magical world. Adding to her diverse roles, Bolger lent her voice to the character of Umi in the English language version of Studio Ghibli’s animated film, “From Up on Poppy Hill”, released in 2011. This venture into voice acting showcased another facet of her performance skills, allowing her to bring the beloved animated character to English-speaking audiences.
Bolger’s career gained significant momentum on television with her compelling portrayal of Princess Mary Tudor in the historical drama “The Tudors” (2008-2010). This role not only brought her widespread recognition but also earned her an Irish Film and Television Award, marking a key achievement in her early career.
Subsequently, she showcased her versatility in the fantasy genre as Princess Aurora in “Once Upon a Time” (2012-2015) and took on the action-orientated role of Jade in the martial arts series “Into the Badlands” (2015-2017), further establishing her range as an actress. In 2018, she joined the cast of Mayans M.C., a spin-off of Sons of Anarchy, as Emily Thomas, the wife of the protagonist.
Sarah Bolger has also starred in several independent and horror films, such as The Moth Diaries (2011), The Lazarus Effect (2015), Emelie (2015), and A Good Woman Is Hard to Find (2019).
Sarah Bolger is a practicing Catholic and has said that her faith is important to her. She was selected to be part of the project “The Face of Ireland” by photographer Kevin Abosch in 2011, along with other Irish celebrities. She has also been involved in charity work, such as supporting the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
Sarah Bolger has been in a relationship with actor Julian Morris since 2012. They met on the set of Once Upon a Time and have been living together in Los Angeles. Bolger has said that she considers Ireland her home and visits frequently. Beyond her professional life, Bolger is often accompanied by her canine companion, Darby, who frequently joins her on her journeys.
