Robert Lindsay Stevenson, known professionally as Robert Lindsay, was one of three children born to Joyce (née Dunmore) and Norman Stevenson, who worked at the local Stanton Ironworks. His father was a World War II veteran, having served on a minesweeper.

Lindsay’s early education took place at Gladstone Boys’ School. After leaving school, he enrolled in the drama department of Clarendon College in Nottingham, initially intending to become a drama teacher. However, his friends at Nottingham Playhouse encouraged him to apply to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). In 1968, he was accepted into RADA with the aid of a government grant.

Lindsay launched his acting career with appearances in British films like “That’ll Be The Day” in 1973, followed by “Three for All” in 1975 and “Adventures of a Taxi Driver” in 1976, shortly after completing his studies at RADA.

Hardy’s initial prominent role on television was as the cockney Teddy Boy Jakey Smith in the ITV comedy series “Get Some In!” which aired from 1975 to 1977. However, it was his portrayal of the delusional revolutionary Wolfie Smith in the BBC sitcom “Citizen Smith” (1977–1980) that truly raised his profile.

His other notable television roles include appearances in “Hornblower,” “Jake’s Progress,” “The Trial of Tony Blair,” and “GBH,” the latter earning him a BAFTA for Best Actor.

In addition to his television and film work, Lindsay has had a distinguished stage career. He has performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and appeared in numerous West End productions, including “Richard III,” “Oliver!” and “The Entertainer”.
