Born: 6 February 1951, Hexham, Northumberland, England.Â
Kevin Whately received his education at Barnard Castle School. Afterward, he pursued accounting and finance studies at Newcastle Polytechnic, completing his degree in 1969. He then underwent acting training at the Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating in 1975. During this time, he also worked at The Old Vic for the National Theatre to support himself.
In the 1970s, before embarking on a professional acting career, Whately acted as an amateur at the People’s Theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne. Additionally, his brother, Frank, works as a lecturer at Kingston University in London.
Whately’s breakthrough came in 1987 when he was cast as Sergeant Robert Lewis in the popular British detective series “Inspector Morse.” His portrayal of the loyal and dedicated detective won him critical acclaim and made him a household name. Whately continued to portray the character in the spin-off series “Inspector Lewis,” which aired from 2006 to 2015.
In addition to his work on the “Inspector Morse” franchise, Whately has appeared in various other television shows and films. Some of his notable credits include “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet,” “Peak Practice,” and “The English Patient.”
He is married to actress Madelaine Newton, and the couple have two children together.
