Mini Biography

Born: 24 September 1961, Kent, Petts Wood, Kent, England

Jack Dee is regarded as one of the foremost British comedians known for his deadpan delivery and acerbic wit. Born James Andrew Innes Dee he spent his early years growing up in Winchester, Hampshire. His father, a self-employed owner of a small ad agency and his mother, a housewife, provided a nurturing environment that helped shape Dee’s comedic sensibilities from a young age. Despite his talent for humour, Dee initially pursued a career in advertising after completing his education.

After attending private schools, including Ampleforth College and the University of Cambridge, where he studied modern languages, Dee found his true calling in comedy. It was during his university years that he discovered his passion for stand-up comedy, performing at various comedy clubs around the UK. His unique style of dry humour and observational comedy quickly gained acclaim, leading to appearances at prestigious comedy festivals like the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Dee’s breakthrough in the world of entertainment came in the late 1980s when he won the prestigious Perrier Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1991. This recognition catapulted him to fame and opened the doors to numerous opportunities in television and radio. Known for his blunt delivery and sarcastic humour, Dee became a household name with his own hit television show, “Jack Dee’s Saturday Night,” which aired on ITV in the mid-1990s.

He is perhaps best known for his role as Rick Spleen in the hit BBC sitcom “Lead Balloon,” which ran for four series from 2006 to 2011. The show was praised for its sharp writing and Dee’s pitch-perfect portrayal of a cynical, washed-up comedian facing the challenges of daily life.

Jack Dee is married to actress and playwright Jane Higgins, with whom he has four children.
