Hugh Dennis, born Peter Hugh Dennis grew up in a family deeply rooted in education and religion. His father, John Dennis, was an Anglican priest who later became a bishop, while his mother, Dorothy, was a schoolteacher. Hugh spent his early years in Mill Hill, London, where his father served as vicar. His upbringing was shaped by a blend of academic rigor and spiritual guidance.
Dennis attended University College School in London, where he excelled academically and served as head boy. He later pursued higher education at St John’s College, Cambridge, studying geography. During his time at Cambridge, he joined the prestigious Footlights theatrical group, honing his comedic skills alongside future collaborators like Steve Punt. This experience laid the foundation for his career in comedy and acting.

Hugh Dennis is best known for his roles in British television. He starred as Pete Brockman in the semi-improvised sitcom “Outnumbered,” which explored the chaos of family life with humour and realism. He also appeared in “Mock the Week,” a satirical panel show where his sharp wit and political satire made him a fan favourite. Other notable roles include Dr. Piers Crispin in “My Hero,” Toby in “Not Going Out,” and the Bank Manager in the acclaimed series “Fleabag.” His versatility extends to presenting, as seen in “The Great British Dig,” where he combines his love for history and archaeology.
On the personal front, Dennis has experienced significant life changes. He was married twice, first to Miranda Carroll and later to Catherine Louise Abbot-Anderson, with whom he has two children. Since 2017, he has been in a relationship with actress Claire Skinner, his co-star from “Outnumbered.” Together, they share a quiet yet fulfilling life away from the spotlight.
