Harry Treadaway is an English actor who has appeared in films, television shows and stage plays. He is best known for his roles as Victor Frankenstein in Penny Dreadful, Brady Hartsfield in Mr. Mercedes, and Narek in Star Trek: Picard.
Harry Treadaway has a twin brother, Luke, who is also an actor and an older brother, Sam, who is an artist. His father is an architect and his mother is a primary school teacher. He grew up in Sandford, Devon, where he played in a band called Lizardsun with his brother Luke and two friends. He attended Queen Elizabeth’s Community College in Crediton, Devon, where he was part of the rugby team. He was inspired by Eddie Vedder and joined the National Youth Theatre with his brother Luke. He studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and graduated in 2006.
Harry Treadaway made his professional debut in 2005, starring alongside his brother Luke in Brothers of the Head, a film about conjoined twin brothers in a punk rock band. He played Tom Howe, the band’s rhythm guitarist and songwriter, and performed live on stage and recorded songs for the soundtrack. In 2007, he played Joy Division drummer Stephen Morris in Control, a biopic of Ian Curtis.
He also appeared in Recovery, a film about a family coping with a brain injury, and Cape Wrath, a thriller series. In 2008, he starred in The Disappeared, a horror film, and City of Ember, a fantasy film. He also portrayed Thomas Hurndall, a British activist who was shot by an Israeli soldier, in a television film. In 2009, he made his stage debut in Over There, a play by Mark Ravenhill, with his brother Luke at the Royal Court Theatre. He also appeared in Fish Tank, a drama film, and Pelican Blood, a dark comedy film.
Harry Treadaway’s career continued to flourish in the 2010s and 2020s. He starred in The Last Furlong, an Irish film, in 2011, and in Flight of the Storks, a crime miniseries, in 2012. He played Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but troubled scientist, in Penny Dreadful, a horror series, from 2014 to 2016. He also appeared in films such as The Lone Ranger, Honeymoon, and Gringo.
In 2017, he was cast as Brady Hartsfield, a psychopathic killer, in Mr. Mercedes, a crime series based on Stephen King’s novel. He also played Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in the third season of The Crown, a historical drama series, in 2019. In 2020, he joined the cast of Star Trek: Picard, a sci-fi series, as Narek, a Romulan spy. He also starred in Deceit, a crime miniseries, in 2021, and in The Chemistry of Death, a thriller film, in 2023.
Harry Treadaway has been in a relationship with actress Holliday Grainger since 2015. They have two children together, a daughter born in 2020 and a son born in 2022. He is good friends with actor Matt Smith, whom he met at the National Youth Theatre. He is also involved in various charities, such as Amnesty International, Greenpeace and WaterAid. He is a fan of music, rugby and nature.
