Mini Biography

Born: 25 May 1939, Burnley, Lancashire, England. 

Sir Ian McKellen is the second child of Denis McKellen, a civil engineer, and Margery Lois (née Sutcliffe), a homemaker. Just before the onset of the Second World War in September 1939, his family relocated to Wigan from Burnley. They stayed there until McKellen turned twelve, before moving to Bolton in 1951 following his father’s promotion.

McKellen studied at Bolton School (Boys’ Division), where he remains an active supporter by frequently visiting to speak with students. His acting journey began at Bolton Little Theatre, where he currently serves as patron. His initial interest in the theatre was nurtured by his parents, who introduced him to the world of performance by taking him to see Peter Pan at the Opera House in Manchester when he was just three years old.

In 1958, McKellen, then 18 years old, earned a scholarship to St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, where he studied English literature. He was later honoured with the title of Honorary Fellow of the college. During his time at Cambridge, McKellen joined the Marlowe Society and participated in 23 plays over a span of three years.
