Mini Biography
Born: 25 February 1937, Hull, East Yorkshire, England.
Tom Courtenay was raised in a working class family, his father was a ship painter and his mother worked as a shorthand typist. Courtenay’s talent for acting emerged early on at Kingston High School.
After completing his studies at high school, Courtenay studied at the University College London but failed his degree. Undeterred, he pursued his passion for acting by enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.
Tom Courtenay’s acting career took off in the 1960s when he gained critical acclaim for his role in the film “The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner” (1962). This breakthrough performance earned him a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actor. Subsequently, he continued to showcase his versatility in films such as “Billy Liar” (1963) and “Doctor Zhivago” (1965).
Beyond the silver screen, Courtenay has made notable contributions to the theatre. He received a Tony Award nomination for his role in the Broadway production of “The Dresser” (1981) and has been associated with various prestigious theatre companies, including the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Courtenay has been married twice. His first marriage, to actress Cheryl Kennedy, ended in divorce and he later married Isabel Crossley, with whom he has two children.
