Born: October 11th, 1943 in St Austell, Cornwall

John Nettles’ early life was marked by a passion for acting, evident from his school plays and the local amateur theater group. He pursued his theatrical aspirations by enrolling at the University of Southampton, majoring in history and philosophy. Despite his academic pursuits, Nettles continued to  participate in university productions, developing his craft and refining his skills.

After graduating, Nettles embarked on a professional acting career, initially appearing in minor roles in films and television series. His breakthrough came in 1981 when he landed the lead role in the detective series “Bergerac,” portraying the charming and enigmatic DS Jim Bergerac. The series’ success catapulted Nettles into the limelight, earning him international recognition and establishing him as a leading figure in British television.

In 1995, John Nettles took on another iconic role, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby, in the crime drama series “Midsomer Murders.” The series became a global phenomenon, captivating audiences with its blend of humour, suspense, and picturesque countryside settings. Nettles’ portrayal of Barnaby, a sharp and methodical investigator with a dry wit, won him immense popularity, making him one of the most recognisable faces on television.

Beyond his professional achievements, John Nettles is known for his philanthropic endeavours. He is a patron of various charities, including the Mare and Foal Sanctuary, a horse rescue and rehoming organisation.
