Eddie Redmayne is an English actor who has won various awards, including an Oscar, a Tony, a BAFTA and two Olivier Awards. He is known for his roles in biographical films such as The Theory of Everything, The Danish Girl, and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Eddie Redmayne’s mother runs a relocation business and his father is a businessman in corporate finance. His father’s grandfather was Sir Richard Redmayne, a distinguished engineer specialising in civil and mining projects. He has an elder brother, a younger brother, an elder half-brother and a half-sister.

Eddie Redmayne attended Eaton House, St Paul’s Juniors and Eton College, where he was in the same year as Prince William. He sang in the choir and received a music scholarship. He then studied history of art at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a 2:1 in 2003.

Eddie Redmayne began his professional acting career in West End theatre before making his screen debut in 1996 with guest television appearances. His first films were Like Minds (2006), The Good Shepherd (2006) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). On the stage, he starred in the productions of Red from 2009 to 2010 and Richard II from 2011 to 2012. The former won him the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

His film breakthrough came with the roles of Colin Clark in the biopic My Week with Marilyn (2011) and Marius Pontmercy in the musical Les Misérables (2012). Eddie Redmayne received back-to-back Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for his roles as physicist Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything” (2014) and as transgender artist Lili Elbe in “The Danish Girl” (2015), securing the award for the first performance. From 2016 to 2022, he starred as Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts film series and from 2021 to 2022, he starred in a production of Cabaret, earning the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He also portrayed Tom Hayden in The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020) and Charles Cullen in The Good Nurse (2022).

Eddie Redmayne tied the knot with Hannah Bagshawe, a public relations executive, in 2014. They have two children, a daughter born in 2016 and a son born in 2018. Redmayne is an ambassador for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and a patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2015 Birthday Honours for services to drama.
