Dawn French’s early life was shaped by a close-knit family and a passion for performing. She attended Caistor Grammar School and Plymouth College, where her talent for comedy shone through. After completing her A-levels, she enrolled at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where she met fellow aspiring comedian Jennifer Saunders.
Their paths intertwined in 1981 when they joined the Comedy Store, a London-based comedy club that launched their careers. Together, they formed the comedic duo French and Saunders, which quickly gained recognition for their sharp wit, irreverent humour, and fearless parodies of popular culture and celebrities. Their sketch show, French and Saunders, which ran from 1987 to 2007, became a cultural phenomenon, captivating audiences with its innovative humour and fearless social commentary.
French’s individual star continued to rise, particularly with her portrayal of the quirky but lovable Geraldine Granger in the BBC sitcom “The Vicar of Dibley” (1994-2007). The show’s success cemented her status as a national treasure, earning her numerous accolades, including a BAFTA Fellowship in 2009.
