Mini Biography
Born: 11 February 1982, Reading, Berkshire, England.
Natalie Dormer’s early life was marked by her passion for dance, which she pursued at the Allenova School of Dancing. Despite facing bullying at school, she excelled academically and was the “academic hopeful” of her family. She attended Chiltern Edge Secondary School and later Reading Blue Coat School for her sixth form. Dormer’s academic prowess nearly led her to study history at the University of Cambridge but a misread question on her A-level history exam altered her path. Instead, she chose to audition for drama schools and was accepted into the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
Natalie Dormer’s acting career began shortly after graduating from Webber Douglas when she landed the role of Victoria in the 2005 film “Casanova.” Her performance caught the attention of director Lasse Hallström, who expanded her part due to her impressive comedic timing. However, following her film debut, Dormer experienced a challenging period of unemployment, which she attributes to “bad representation.” During this time, she took on jobs as a waitress and in data entry, reflecting later that this phase taught her valuable lessons.
Her breakthrough came with the role of Anne Boleyn in the Showtime series “The Tudors” from 2007 to 2010. Following “The Tudors,” Dormer continued to take on diverse roles, including the Duchess of York in Madonna’s film “W.E.” and Private Lorraine in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” both released in 2011.
Natalie Dormer’s international recognition soared with her portrayal of Margaery Tyrell in the HBO series “Game of Thrones” from 2012 to 2016. Her performance was celebrated for its cunning and charm, making Margaery a fan-favorite character. Additionally, Dormer played Cressida in the final two installments of “The Hunger Games” franchise, which rank among her highest-grossing films. She also portrayed Irene Adler/Moriarty in the CBS series “Elementary” and voiced Onica in “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance”.
On the personal front, Natalie Dormer’s relationships have been a subject of public interest. She was engaged to director Anthony Byrne from 2007 to 2018. Following their separation, she began a relationship with actor David Oakes, with whom she has a child. In 2023, it was revealed that Dormer and Oakes had married in a civil ceremony. Dormer has often spoken about the influence of Cate Blanchett on her career and identifies as a feminist. She is known for her candidness regarding her comfort with performing nude scenes, a topic that has sparked both criticism and praise.
