Born: 27 June 1936, Forest Gate, Essex, England. 

Shirley Anne Field was an English actress who performed on stage, film and television since 1955, prominent during the British New Wave.

Shirley Anne Field was born as Shirley Broomfield in Forest Gate, London and was partly raised in a children’s home after being abandoned by her parents. She was evacuated to Bolton during the war, where she was fostered by two families. She returned to London at the age of 15 and trained as a typist while attending school. She also enrolled in a modelling course and became a pin-up model for magazines.

Shirley Anne Field’s acting career began with small parts in films such as Simon and Laura (1955) and Yield to the Night (1956). Her breakthrough came when she was cast as Tina, a beauty queen, opposite Laurence Olivier in The Entertainer (1960), directed by Tony Richardson. She then starred as Doreen, the girlfriend of a rebellious factory worker, played by Albert Finney, in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960), a landmark film of the New Wave movement.

Shirley Anne Field went on to work with Hollywood stars such as Steve McQueen, Robert Wagner, Yul Brynner and George Chakiris in films such as The War Lover (1962) and Kings of the Sun (1963). She also appeared in British comedies such as Alfie (1966) and Carry On Admiral (1957). She continued to act in theatre and TV, notably in the soap opera Santa Barbara (1988) and the acclaimed film My Beautiful Laundrette (1985).

Field married Charles Crichton-Stuart, a Scottish aristocrat, in 1967 and had a son, Adam, in 1968. They divorced in 1975. Field never remarried, but had several relationships, including one with the actor Ned Beatty. In 1979, she found her biological mother and discovered that she had three half-sisters living in Georgia, USA. She died in 2023 at the age of 87, after a long and varied career in film, theatre and TV.
